May 13, 1938 Grace Hall Pugh, manager of the Burlington Airport, earned her pilot’s license, becoming the first female licensed pilot in Vermont. Like other aircraft of the time, her plane, nicknamed “The Mouse”, had no navigational equipment. She said “We used the railroads and we called them our ‘iron compass’. We had to stick our nose out of the cockpit to watch.”
