Osa Leighty Johnson Flies Into Adventure

March 14, 1894 Osa Leighty Johnson was born in Chanute, Kansas. Osa married fellow Kansan Martin Johnson and they both learned to fly, purchasing a Sikorsky amphibious plane and heading off on a life of adventure. From 1917 to 1936 they set up camp in some of the most remote places on earth. The movies they filmed introduced the rest of the world to cannibals, headhunters and magnificent scenery. They were the first to fly over Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is based upon the Johnson’s experiences and displays their films and photographs, including a copy of Osa’s autobiography I MARRIED ADVENTURE.
